thinking- a rarity?

The phenomenon is just a season old and when I read about this 'banana diet in Japan' triggered off by a pharmacist losing weight by following a simple organic diet based on bananas; I chuckled to myself. This diet had resulted in huge sales of bananas and a book; sending the price of bananas upwards.

This reminds me of a blog I had written, a month ago, about 'soft-drinks' and how people blindly follow a fad and if it is being endorsed by a popular celebrity then the sales counters work overtime.

All this is pointing to one thing- Have we stopped thinking? We seem to have either lost our ability to reason and question. The category of people who like to follow blindly is huge. I may be neither exaggerating nor denigrating the human race when I say that the percentage of people in this category might be on the rise as time goes by. This mob-mentality is life-threatening to the intelligentsia and impedes development of societies. This trend is dangerous as clever people with malicious intentions can sway large masses and create unrest in the nation. Digging deeper, I think most people find it easy to follow others and are afraid to follow their own heart and mind, reflecting poorly on our awareness of our self.

Prajwala

A week or so ago, I read an article on Prajwala, a non-profit organization working toward rehabilitating women and their children rescued from the sex-industry and also pursuing the sex traffickers. I decided to pay a visit and finally today, I was able to meet Dr. Sunitha Krishnan as I wanted to do some service to Prajwala and very soon I found that I could render some help. Here is a picture of me along with her; the honour is all mine.

The difference is- in India, we have more than 12 million and they are mostly our own countrymen.

image, superstition or political satire?

The French President, Nicolas Sarkozy is worried about the voodoo dolls being sold!

Are people using those dolls as stress busters and to vent their feelings? Is this a kind of political satire? Are the citizens of France using this to express their thoughts about his policies and actions?

Personally, I think the President should ignore such phenomena and it will help project the view that he is a serious kind of guy and not someone who can be rattled easily. He should simply get on with his business of governing the country.
